Every follower of Jesus eventually asks the same quiet question: “What exactly am I supposed to be doing here?” Whether you’re new to faith or have been in church for decades, understanding spiritual gifts is one of the most practical and important things you can explore as a Christian.
Why the Church in Corinth Kept Having Problems
The church in Corinth was a mess. Division, immorality, lawsuits between believers, arguments over marriage and food and worship. But underneath every single one of those issues was the same root problem: they had forgotten that God made them one body.
People were lifting themselves up. Some thought they were better than others. Some felt useless and invisible. And that tension is exactly what Paul addresses when he gets to the topic of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12.
Two Groups That Still Exist in Churches Today
Paul was writing to two very different kinds of people sitting in the same room.
- Those who felt like they had nothing to offer and wondered if they even belonged.
- Those who had been using their gifts for a long time and quietly started to believe their contribution mattered more than everyone else’s.
Both groups needed correction. One needed encouragement. The other needed humility. And Paul delivers both.
What Does It Mean That “No One Can Say Jesus Is Lord Except by the Holy Spirit”?
Before Paul even lists the gifts, he lays down a foundation. He tells the Corinthians that anything lifting Jesus up comes from the Holy Spirit living inside a believer. Anything tearing Jesus or His people down does not come from God.
As James 3:10 puts it: “Out of the same mouth proceed blessings and cursings, my brethren. These things ought not to be so.”
And Luke 6:45 makes it even clearer: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good. And an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
The word “abundance” is key. Whatever fills you most is what comes out. You cannot ride the fence. You are either with Him or you are not.
Does Every Christian Have a Spiritual Gift?
Yes. Absolutely and without exception.
1 Corinthians 12:7 says: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
Two things stand out in that verse. First, “each one” means no one is skipped. If you are in Christ, you have a gift. Second, that gift is not for your own benefit. It exists for the people around you, your church, your community, the lost.
Think of it this way: if your right hand decided one morning that it felt unappreciated and refused to work, your whole body would suffer. You could not button your shirt, tie your shoes, or pick up your Bible. One member stops working and the whole body pays the price.
What Are the Spiritual Gifts Listed in 1 Corinthians 12?
Paul gives examples of gifts in verses 8 through 10. These are not an exhaustive list but a window into the kinds of ways the Spirit works through people.
The Word of Wisdom
This is not about being the smartest person in the room. It is about someone who goes to God in prayer, seeks His word, and receives wisdom to help others navigate real problems in their lives.
The Word of Knowledge
This is the ability to understand the deep things of Scripture, not just the words themselves but the context and meaning, and then open it up to others in a way that makes them see something they never noticed before.
Faith
Everyone who follows Christ has faith, but this is a specific kind. It is the person who looks at an impossible mountain and prays without stopping, fully believing God will move. It is a rare and powerful gift.
Gifts of Healing
God healed in the Old Testament. He healed in the New Testament. He still heals today, sometimes through medicine and doctors, and sometimes through prayer and the laying on of hands. When healing happens, the credit belongs to Christ and the body of believers surrounding that person.
The Working of Miracles
Signs and wonders that have no natural explanation. God still does them through people who have surrendered their lives to Him and seek His glory, not their own.
Prophecy
In the New Testament, prophecy is not primarily about predicting the future. It is about hearing from God and speaking exactly what needs to be said, to the right person, at the right moment. If someone has ever said something to you that they had no way of knowing you needed to hear, that was not a coincidence. That was prophecy.
Discerning of Spirits
The ability to tell the difference between what is from God, what is from the enemy, and what is just someone’s personal opinion. This gift is critical because, as 2 Corinthians 11:14 warns: “Satan himself transforms into an angel of light.” Not everything that looks spiritual is spiritual.
Different Kinds of Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues
Paul lists both of these gifts. Where tongues are present, interpretation must follow so the church can understand and be built up. These gifts will be covered in greater depth when Paul addresses them in chapter 14.
Who Decides Which Gift You Receive?
Verse 11 answers this directly: “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
The Spirit decides. Not your education. Not your personality. Not how long you have been saved or how many Sundays you have attended. The Spirit chose your gift on purpose, for a reason, and for the benefit of the people around you.
Chasing the gift you wish you had will leave you frustrated. Surrendering to the gift God actually gave you is where purpose and joy are found. God is a whole lot better at picking your purpose than you are.
How Do You Discover Your Spiritual Gift?
You will not find your gift sitting on the sidelines. You find it by getting in the game.
Start with what you already know how to do. You know how to pray. You know how to love people. You know how to encourage someone or show up and serve. Start there. God has a way of revealing your gift while you are already serving Him.
If you try something and it is not your thing, that is okay. Try something else. But you have to move. The Spirit placed you in the body of Christ on purpose, and that body needs what He put inside of you.
What Happens When We Ignore Our Gifts?
Hiding what God gave you is not humility. It is disobedience.
Someone’s life is drastically different today based on whether you choose to use your gift or not. That is not an exaggeration. That is the weight of what Paul is saying. The body suffers when one member stops functioning.
And if you have been using your gift but quietly started ranking it above others, that Spirit of superiority is the same root that was tearing Corinth apart. No gift is more important than another. The most important finger on your hand is whichever one stops working.
Life Application
This week, take one step toward using what God put in you. Do not wait until you have it all figured out. Start with what you know. Pray for someone. Encourage a person who needs it. Volunteer for something at your church you have been putting off. Show up and try.
Ask yourself these questions as you go into the week:
- Am I sitting on a gift I already know God has given me? What excuse have I been using to stay on the sidelines?
- Have I been looking down at others in my church and quietly ranking their contributions as less important than mine?
- What is one practical step I can take this week to serve the people around me, even before I fully understand my gift?
The Spirit placed you in the body of Christ on purpose. Your brothers and sisters need what God put inside of you. Do not let another week go by without taking one step toward offering it.
