From Ron Renner: Finding Hope Beyond Life’s Obstacles
Easter Sunday brings millions to church, making it the most attended service of the year. Yet amid all the celebration, many people arrive carrying heavy burdens – obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. The resurrection story offers profound hope for anyone facing seemingly immovable barriers in their lives.
What Were the Women Really Worried About?
In Mark 16:2-3, we find three women making their way to Jesus’ tomb with a pressing concern: “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” They were focused entirely on the obstacle blocking their path.
These women had heard Jesus promise that in three days He would raise up the temple. They had witnessed His miracles and followed His teachings. Yet when faced with a practical problem, they forgot about resurrection power and fixated on the stone.
How Do We Live Around Our Stones?
Like those women, we often organize our entire lives around obstacles rather than possibilities. We focus more on what’s blocking us than on the One who can clear the way.
Consider how often we:
- Plan our lives around limitations instead of miracles
- Focus on what’s in the way instead of the One who makes the way
- Spend all our energy on obstacles rather than the path to rising above them
What Stones Are You Facing Today?
Everyone has unwanted obstacles – situations we never planned for, problems we can’t solve on our own, limitations that seem permanent. Maybe it’s a relationship that’s broken, a financial crisis, a health issue, or a pattern of sin that keeps tripping you up.
The question these women asked echoes in our hearts: “Who will roll away this stone?”
What Happened When They Arrived at the Tomb?
Mark 16:4 reveals the stunning truth: “But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.”
The very obstacle they worried about was already gone. While they focused on the problem, God had already provided the solution.
Why Was the Stone Moved?
Here’s a crucial insight: Jesus didn’t need the stone rolled away to exit the tomb. In His resurrection body, He could have walked right through it. The stone was moved so they could look in and see that He had risen.
God often removes obstacles not just to solve our problems, but so we can see His power at work and believe in His promises.
What Does This Mean for Your Obstacles?
The resurrection demonstrates that God specializes in doing the impossible. No stone in your life is too large for Him to move. But here’s what we must understand:
God Keeps His Promises
Everything God has in store for you is settled in His promises. The Bible is filled with commitments He’s made to those who believe. When God shows up, something always happens.
Expect the Unexpected
The women came to prepare a body for burial but encountered an empty tomb and an angel. God rarely works exactly as we expect, but He always works for our good.
Sometimes what looks like a closed door is actually God redirecting us toward something better than we imagined.
How Can You Experience Resurrection Power?
Three key elements unlock God’s promises in your life:
Faith
You must believe that God can and will do what He promises. Without faith, His power remains theoretical rather than practical.
Prayer
Communicate with God about your obstacles. Ask Him to move supernaturally in your situation.
Obedience
Follow God’s leading even when you can’t see the full picture. Trust His guidance over your own understanding.
What About Sin – The Ultimate Obstacle?
The greatest stone blocking our path to God is sin – our failure to meet His perfect standard. This creates a penalty of spiritual death that we cannot remove ourselves.
But the resurrection proves that Christ paid that penalty and conquered death itself. When you trust in Him, you don’t just get forgiveness – you get a completely new life.
Life Application
This week, instead of focusing on the stones in your path, shift your attention to the Stone Mover. God is already working in ways you may not see, preparing to reveal His power in your situation.
Stop organizing your life around obstacles and start expecting God to do the unexpected. Trust Him with whatever seems impossible right now.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What obstacles am I allowing to define my life instead of trusting God’s promises?
- Am I expecting God to work one way when He might have something completely different planned?
- How can I demonstrate faith, prayer, and obedience in my current situation this week?
- What would change in my life if I truly believed that no stone is too big for God to move?
The same resurrection power that rolled away the stone 2,000 years ago is available to you today. Don’t go to the tomb looking for one thing when God is doing something far greater.
